I was recently approached by a larger operator to do overland trips for his company, and when I mentioned my qualifications, he said the following:
Overland guides do not need the qualifications. Hmm, this has me wondering how a large SATSA company gets away with hiring of guides who are not clearly definied under our requirements or FGASA.
Now on a personal level, I know that those guides get paid poorly - but are the guests aware that they get an unqualified guide and that they can expect different levels of service from these guys? Us guides who have been in the industry for more than 15 years will not work for less than we were earning 10 years ago, but it seems that everyone expects us to drop our rates to get work from these operators who are supposed to be industry leaders and whose insurance is null and void if there is an incident as per their permit requirments needing a suitaably qualified guide for that region. The South Afican way of doing business and bending rules is rife in Tourism.
When last did a hotel get approached to drop their rates to 10 years ago rates? This is what overland guys are getting paid. Yes they have fulltime employment, but my point stays - is the client aware of what they are getting? Goedkoop is duurkoop...
