The Department of Tourism says freelance guides registered under the Provincial registrar of tourists guides will automatically qualify for financial relief set aside by the Department.
On Sunday, Minister of Tourism Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane announced that the Department has set aside R30 Million, which will provide financial relief to guides for a period of two to three months.
Speaking to the Guide Magazine, Department Spokesperson Hlengiwe Nhlabathi Makota said," due to the urgent relief that is required by the sector, the Department has decided to proceed with “a No application process". This effectively means that the source of information will come from the provincial databases that are maintained by the various Provincial Registrars of Tourist Guides which contains the details of all the registered tourist guides across all nine (9) provinces. The Department will then conduct verifications and validate the information. Once this exercise is completed, the department will proceed with cardless payments to all freelance guides as their aim is to expedite payments. Over the next two (2) weeks, Provincial Registrars will work towards ensuring that all the relevant information on their respective databases are correct, particularly the contact details of all their guides. The Department aims to commence with payments to freelance guides by end June 2020.
Makota added that beneficiaries of the scheme will include; tour guides registered in terms of the tourism act, tour guides who are not employed by any company and those that have not formed their companies. The Department aims to process first payment by the end of June. "We will publish reqular updates on various platforms and we also encourage guides to adhere to necessary protocol to curb the spread of Covid 19, as they also prepare themselves for the reopening of the sector", she said. Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane has committed to provide personal protective equipment for guides.
